When keeper Enyeama, Nigeria’s choice goal keeper of many years disclosed that he would not return as the keeper for the Nigerian football team, the Nigerian Football Federation were faced with a dilemma and after much consideration, they called up Carl Ikeme, a Premiership star player to take his place which he did.
Naijapr presents you with a few things you need to know about the keeper.
His age
He was born on the 8th of June, 1986 which makes him 31 years old.
How he became a Premiership star player
Born in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands in UK, Carl Ikeme passed through the wolves football academy till he was given a chance in 2003 on the Team A Squad for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
His surprise call up
As mentioned above, after Enyeama made up his mind to resign from his post as a Nigerian keeper, Sunday Oliseh, the new coach called him up to be the keeper.
He is very tall
He is very tall as he is 6ft 3 inches tall.
He is a Nigerian
A lot of people doubted that this keeper is a Nigerian because of his fair complexion, but the fact is that he is a Nigerian as his father is from Onitsha, Anambra State.
He was once called by late Stephen Keshi
There was a time he was invited by late Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, but he was not able to make the team because he sustained an injury during that time.
His contract with wolves ended on the 30th of July
He joined Wolves since the 1st of July in 2003, and his contract with them ended on the 30th of July.
He has suffered racist attacks
He has suffered a lot of racists attacks in England, and one of the most popular ones was the one that happened in a League One match at the Bank’s Stadium against Walsall where their keeper called him a c**n two times.
In line with that, he once said he has been called all names under the sun, but to him, “it’s just part of the fun of being a goalkeeper.”
He spent most of his professional career on loan
It cannot be said whether it is a testimony of Ikeme’s prowess or otherwise, but the keeper was able to make nine loan moves within ten years.
He claimed it was tough going out on loan and there were times he thought his time would never come, until he was finally picked as Wolves’ number one.
He has health issues
Apart from the fact that he suffered a knee injury during the 2006-2007 session and had to undergo a surgery which made him kept out of the game until late in 2007 when he recovered and served as a substitute keeper, he is currently in the hospital and is being treated for Leukaemia.
A lot of his friends and fans are hoping for the best for him while a fundraising is being one for him.
It should be noted that he has also been marred by a series of other injuries. Another example is in March 2013 when he broke his hand during a football interval where he had to be substituted at half time as a result of it.
As a result of his hand injury, he had to stay on the side-lines for several weeks.
